Name: Annual Turtle Day
Date: April 8, 2018
Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM EDT
Event Description:
Trout Lake Nature Center (TLNC) is celebrating with Turtle Day, featuring turtle-focused educational activities, turtle experts, visiting turtles, and TLNC’s own live (rescued) turtles in their “home.”
The event is a part of Florida’s official Gopher Tortoise Day. Turtles are found in all 67 Florida counties—on land and in the water. This annual event aims to teach people about these dynamic and personable turtles and tortoises.
In addition to turtles, human naturalists with special expertise in the slow-moving aquatic and terrestrial reptiles will participate in the event. Among them are:
Carissa Kent, founder of Saving Florida’s Gopher Tortoises, who has saved thousands of gopher tortoises from the unimaginable fate of slow death when their burrows in the ground are paved over by construction . (While Florida law now protects the tortoises, there are many “Incidental Take Permit” sites whose permits were issued prior to the legislation and are “grandfathered.”)
Logan Heinzelman, amateur turtle fancier. Logan is known for the many turtles he has rehomed and taken care of. Logan will bring many of his turtles to the event.
Linda Gomez, Grassy Lakes Elementary School teacher and turtle-lover. Gomez opened her home to turtles needing a new home. Exotic and pet turtles often need to be rehomed, but when these turtles are older and larger finding a good home can be difficult.
Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission's Wildlife trailer will be here too.
TLNC is home to several species of turtles, which are active at this time of year. Turtles are likely to be observed in the wetlands or laying eggs along some of the trails. Come learn about Florida’s turtles and their importance to healthy ecosystems. Learn what you can do to help turtles.
There is no charge for admission but donations will help to feed our turtles. Refreshments will be for sale to benefit TLNC.
